Neptune Papers Issue Ten — Cover: The Duchess of Devonshire by François Halard

Neptune Papers Issue Ten is the Icons Issue — an exploration of people who have lived life entirely on their own terms. For this cover, photographer François Halard visited Chatsworth in 2005, the Derbyshire seat of the Cavendish family, to document its surroundings and the woman who presided over them: Deborah Cavendish née Mitford, the eleventh Duchess of Devonshire.

His portraits catch her at equal ease among farm baskets brimming with eggs and draped in the seven-piece Devonshire parure — a suite of jewels commissioned in 1856 and last worn to a royal coronation. Behind her in one image hangs a painting by Lucian Freud, who had been the Duchess's first house guest at Chatsworth. Alongside this portrait, Issue Ten features Lauren Hutton, Malgosia Bela, Joseph Dirand, Dries Van Noten, The Row and many others. 468 pages.
